UKATA Asbestos Awareness

Objectives:

To provide delegates with an awareness and knowledge of where asbestos can be found in structures and the health hazards associated with it. An understanding of how to respond if suspect materials are inadvertently disturbed.

Who Should Attend?

Workers who may come across asbestos in the work place or are working on a site where asbestos work is being carried out, for example, project managers, site managers and site supervisors.

Course Content:

The course aims to provide delegates with an awareness and knowledge of the hazards and risks posed by asbestos containing materials (ACMs). The course further gives an overview of the legislative measures in place to permit employees to safeguard themselves and others affected by work activities.

Delegates will be familiarised with the types, uses and likely occurrences of asbestos in buildings. Know how to avoid the risks from asbestos by understanding where to obtain information on asbestos in premises prior to commencing work. What to do if suspicious materials are found, including the procedures to be followed when coming into unintentional contact with ACMs, and gain an understanding of the appropriate emergency arrangements. The health effects of exposure to asbestos will also be highlighted.

Delegates will undertake a multiple choice test at the end of the course.

Outcomes:

Delegates will gain awareness of the key aspects of asbestos regulations and how they fit into the broader context of health and safety legislation.

Successful delegates will be issued with a UKATA certificate valid for 1 year (Category A).

Delegate Preparation:

There is no requirement for delegates to have any previous knowledge of asbestos. This course is suitable for beginners.
