Face Fit Testing Course on the 28th April

Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) includes a tight-fitting facepiece which may be a full face mask, a half mask, or a filtering facepiece (commonly referred to as a disposable mask). The performance of these types of facepieces relies heavily on the quality of fit of the facepiece to the wearer’s face.

An inadequate fit will significantly reduce the protection provided to the wearer. The presence of facial hair in the region of the face seal will also significantly reduce the protection provided.  Recent research indicates that up to 50% of all RPE used does not offer the wearer the level of protection assumed and one of the major reasons is that it simply does not fit!

Where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used as a control measure, it is vital that the selected RPE is adequate and suitable. RPE must reduce exposure to as low as reasonably practicable, and in any case to below any applicable Workplace Exposure Limits (WEL) or Control Limits.

To ensure that the selected RPE has the potential to provide adequate protection for individual wearers, the ACoPs supporting the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), the Control of Asbestos at Work (CAR) and the Control of Lead at Work (CLAW) Regulations stipulate that tight-fitting RPE must be fit tested as part of the selection process. This will help to ensure that inadequately fitting facepieces are not selected for use. Ill-fitting facepieces can create inward leakages of airborne contaminants and the wearer will not be protected.

Sanctus Training Limited offer a short, inexpensive Face Fit Testing course which trains personnel to fit test their workers.  Delegates will benefit from a fit2fit registered instructor who will ensure delegates are provided with the knowledge and competency required to perform face fit testing.  Advice will be given regarding common pitfalls and delegates will be use a quantitative ‘taste test’ face fit testing kit to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice. The next course will be delivered on the 28th April at Cam, Dursley.
